Andavilli's compilation of articles released

Staff Reporter

`Writing a column requires one to do the balancing act'

VIJAYAWADA: Writing a column is a tedious task, and the writer will have to do a delicate balancing act.

The columnist is expected to comment on the acts of people who are in the limelight but without hurting or praising them, according to K. Ramachandra Murthy, chief editor of `Andhra Jyothi' Telugu daily.

He was speaking after releasing `Passing Scene-II', a compilation of the articles written by columnist Andavilli Satyanarayana in the `80s, on Saturday.

Mr. Murthy recalled the days when he worked in the city as sub-editor in `Andhra Prabha' Telugu daily for almost a decade, when the column `One Town... Two Town' by Mr. Andavilli was regularly published.

"The column inspired me a lot and made me write a similar column titled `Nagara Sancharam' for Andhra Prabha. From my experience, I learnt that it is not easy to write a column continuously. I stopped it after a couple of years," he said.

Outlining the required qualities of a columnist, Mr. Murthy said observation of people and issues in the society, command over language and writing skills to convey a message to the society in a subtle way were the prerequisites.

"The comment should be judicious and it should throw some light on contemporary issues," he said.

Literary skills

"Mr. Andavilli is known for his language and literary skills. We need not say about his observation and humour, as he has been writing columns for the last three decades," Mr. Murthy said.

Senior journalist C. Raghavachari said that the field of journalism had witnessed several changes in the last three decades.

"As a columnist, Mr. Andavilli observed them from close quarters and moulded his columns accordingly," he said.

Physician Kamineni Pattabhiramaiah presided over the programme, in which students and well-wishers of Mr. Andavilli felicitated him.
