Congress seeks probe into `harassment'

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on Saturday demanded a probe into a criminal case registered against M.P. Renukacharya, BJP MLA. The legislator has been accused of harassing a woman.

In a press statement here on Saturday, KPCC general secretaries Prakash K. Rathod, MLC, and M. Ramachandrappa, said Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa had been issuing misleading statements stating that Mr. Renukacharya would be expelled from the party if he had harassed Jayalakshmi (36), a nurse.

He simultaneously stated that Mr. Renukacharya was innocent and that the incident was the act of some Congress leaders in defaming him.

The Congress leaders demanded the Government allow the police to conduct a detailed probe into the case, without any fear. Without any evidence, Mr. Yediyurappa had also been dragging the names of Congress leaders into the case, which was not correct. Instead of forwarding the resignation to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Mr. Renukacharya, who is also the chairman of KEONICS, had submitted the resignation letter to Mr. Yediyurappa and State BJP president D.V. Sadananda Gowda, they said and termed it as a "drama by the MLA."

Mr. Rathod and Mr. Ramachandrappa said the conduct of the MLA had brought disrepute to the BJP. "This is the culture of the BJP". The Congress would not allow its leaders to indulge in such unlawful activities, they said.

The Chandra Layout police on Friday registered a criminal case against Mr. Renukacharya following a complaint by Ms. Jayalakshmi who attempted suicide on Sunday following alleged harassment by the legislator.
