Street vendors removed from ghat road in Yercaud

Special Correspondent

Their presence had led to traffic congestion on the road

YERCAUD: Revenue officials on Sunday removed 300 street vendors who had encroached upon the main ghat road, just opposite to the Yercaud Lake.

The vendors, a majority of them from Salem city, used to spread their wares on both sides of the road, just opposite to the Yercaud Lake every Sunday. Salem district administration had built about 50 pucca concrete sheds to house these vendors in the near-by locality. It had issued notices to them to vacate the road too. But these vendors had steadfastly refused to leave the road.

A heavy tourist inflow into the hill station, particularly during the weekends, and the presence of these street vendors had led to severe traffic congestion on the road, which also happened to be the main ghat road to the hill station from Salem city.

Complaints

Police and officials had received numerous complaints on dumping of vegetable waste and other waste materials in the lake and causing hardship to sightseers who wanted to enjoy the salubrious climate of the hill station.

Hence on Sunday a team of officials, assisted by the police, removed the vendors from the road and asked them to move into the sheds, which had been remaining vacant and was misused for nefarious activities. "The removal has restored free flow of traffic at this point and also presented the tourists a panoramic view of the lake from the road," sources said.
