Bank accounts for all rural people soon

Staff Reporter

ERODE: Nationalised banks are now coming to the doorsteps of the rural people and asking them to open savings accounts, Erode collector T. Udhaychandran said recently in Pariyur Vellalapalayam near Gobichettipalayam

"At one time, poor and middle class families, especially those in rural parts, could not avail of bank loans and other facilities, as they were not encouraged to open accounts in banks, but now the nationalised banks are coming to the doorsteps of the rural people. This will help people obtain loans, he said, while inaugurating the "Bank Service to All Rural People" scheme conducted by Canara Bank.

The collector said that such bank service for all schemes would be extended to all parts of the district and before June, the banks would encourage people to open as many accounts as possible.

He said that usually for getting any loan, a bank account was necessary, so after opening the account, people could apply for small loans, industrial loans and other types of loans. These would be sanctioned after verifying their repayment capacity. He said in Pariyur Vellalapalayam and Nanjai Gobi alone, 710 villagers had opened their accounts with Canara Bank.

The collector said that the banks were ready to render all possible help to develop the economic standard of the people.

He also wanted the bankers to create awareness among the rural people about the importance of opening a bank account. He said such opening of accounts in banks would help the farming community in a big way.

Schemes

He said that through the National Horticulture Mission, several schemes had been introduced. He stressed that farmers should introduce drip irrigation system for their sugarcane, banana and turmeric crops, and get more yield with smaller quantities of water.

He also appealed to the farmers to raise mulberry on their land and involve themselves in sericulture activities. He wanted the farmers to start as many silk reeling units as possible and avail of the subsidies and low-interest bank loans. Mr. Udhaychandran said that often the banana crop and other crops were affected by heavy gale and strong winds.

Because of this, farmers are incurring heavy loss.

With the intention of saving farmers from such natural calamities, the crop insurance scheme has already been introduced.
