Nigerian episode: family members thank Collector

Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE: The family members of D. Ramachandran (36), who was rescued from the abductors in Nigeria, met District Collector Rajendra Ratnoo here on Sunday and thanked him for his efforts to secure his release.

Armed gangsters in Nigeria had abducted Ramachandran of Neyveli along with his colleague Madhusudanan of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday. The family members of Mr. Ramachandran, including elder brother D. Radhakrishnan and elder sister D. Radhamani, shared sweets with the Collector and conveyed their gratitude to him for the timely help.

Fax message

Mr. Ratnoo told presspersons that soon after a fax message was received from the family, he set the process rolling. Through the State Chief Secretary and Home Secretary, the Indian and Nigerian Embassies were alerted. Subsequently, the External Affairs Ministry had established contacts with the Nigerian Government to take speedy action.

Through all these measures, supported by the company's — Global Steel Holdings India Private Ltd — negotiations, the two abducted employees were rescued safely on Saturday.

The Collector also said that after undergoing the mandatory medical examination, Mr. Ramachandran would soon return to Neyveli on leave.
