Achuthanandan lists steps against encroachments

Special Correspondent

Says action will go on despite party affiliations

ALUVA: Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said that encroachers on forests and Government land would be removed irrespective of their party affiliations. Referring to a report in a local newspaper on large-scale encroachment by politicians on forests in the Munnar area, Mr. Achuthanandan told a news conference here on Sunday that no encroacher would be spared. The report had said that a CPI(M) district leader's brother had encroached on 30 acres of forest and that a part of this had recently been sold to a mobile phone company at a high price. The report also mentioned that following the tourism boom in Munnar, politicians of all hues had grabbed large stretches of forests and other Government land.

"We will not distinguish between CPI-CPI (M) encroachers and Kerala Congress (M)-KC (J) encroachers," he said. "The Government will take stern steps against the land sharks regardless of their party affiliations." He said that during the last UDF rule, tourist resorts had mushroomed in the Munnar area and many of these, located on encroached Government land, had been owned by either the relatives or followers of the then Revenue Minister and KC(M) leader K.M. Mani. A pliable Collector had been posted in Idukki district to facilitate the illegal activities, he said.

The Chief Minister recalled how he had waged a battle against encroachments in Mathikettan and Pooyamkutty areas as well as against the land grab in Kovalam during the terms of A.K. Antony and Oommen Chandy as Chief Ministers.

Denial

Denying the Opposition charge that he had lost his zeal to protect Government land from encroachers, he listed out the steps taken by his Government, such as the action to retrieve the Kovalam land and bungalow.
