In-service training in teaching methodology planned

M.Ed courses to be introduced in five Government colleges

Thanjavur: The State Government is planning to give in-service training for two months on the methodology of teaching to Government College Teachers from this year, said the Minister for Education, K.Ponmudy, at Orathanadu, 20 km from here, on Sunday.

Speaking at the valedictory of golden jubilee celebrations of the Government College of Education (B.Ed. college) at Orathanadu, the Minister said that the Government thought that the training was necessary for improving the skills of college teachers.

Initially, nearly 1,100 teachers would be selected for the training.

The Minister also said that steps would be taken for introducing M.Ed courses in five out of the total seven Government colleges of education in the State, including the Orathanadu college.

In the other two colleges, M.Ed courses were already available. The golden jubilee buildings would be constructed at a cost of Rs.1 crore in the Orathanadu college, he said.

The Union Minister of State for Finance, S.S. Palanimanickam, said that B.Ed course equips teachers to rad the minds of the students. Teaching is a noble profession and teachers are respected by the students for ever.

C. Thangamuthu, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, said that the Orathanadu college had two distinctions. T. Udhayakumar, principal of the college, said that the college, started in 1957, was accorded the B+ status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. '

The Minister for Commercial Taxes, S.N.M. Ubayathullah, the Secretary to Government, Higher Edcuation, K. Ganesan, MLAs, T. Mahesh Krishnaswamy and Durai Chandrasekaran, and the Collector, C. Vijayaraj Kumar, participated.
