A trip down memory lane for Nirupama Rao

D. Radhakrishnan

Udhagamandalam: On Sunday, it was a walk down memory lane for the Indian Ambassador to China, Nirupama Rao.

She arrived at the Taj Garden Retreat in Coonoor on Saturday to assist National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan in the boundary talks with his Chinese counterpart, Dai Bingguo.

Visits house

Making the most of a breather in the negotiations, Ms. Rao visited a house at Wellington, which was occupied by her family about 42 years ago.

The present occupant of the house, Vimala Nambiar, told The Hindu that Ms. Rao's father, Colonel P.V.N. Menon, was stationed at Wellington in the 1960s.

First tenants

He and his family were the first tenants of the house, Devi Niwas.

Ms. Rao completed her schooling at the Saint Joseph's Convent in Coonoor in 1964-65.

On seeing that a good part of the house was still in its original shape, Ms. Rao became extremely nostalgic.
