CHENNAI: A waste water treatment plant for both domestic and industrial needs was launched here on Friday. The automatic plant is claimed to be environment-friendly without involving chemical treatment to recycle the waste water. The plant promises to produce clear water that can be used for gardening and irrigation. The biological treatment plant has been made available in various capacities from 5,000 litres to 2 lakh litres. R. Shivakumar, pro Vice-Chancellor of SRM University, said the first plant was installed on the college premises eight months ago at a cost of Rs.15 lakh. It has produced about 1 lakh litres of clear water every day for gardening and other purposes. Moreover, the plant has helped in saving space and electricity, he added. S.Samraj, Managing Director of Mother Indus Aqua Solutions, said the plant had been designed to suit the domestic and industrial needs. The company collaborated with ATB Germany to import the plant and machineries. Plans are on to set up a manufacturing unit in Chennai. Sanjib Biswas, chairman of the Mother Indus Aqua Solutions, appealed to the Government to reduce the import duty for the plant.
