PUDUKOTTAI: A farmer of Avudaiyarkovil taluk has bagged the first prize for registering a record harvest in paddy during the last season in the district. The 38-year-old farmer, C. Sevugaperumal, who has been adopting bio-farming techniques for the past several years, registered a per hectare yield of 9,820 kg of the `BPT 5204' variety he raised in four hectares in Poovalur, eight km south of Avudaiyarkovil. Application of bio-manure for soil enrichment, proper crop protection methods and careful irrigation management had all facilitated him to register the highest yield in the district. "I have been adhering to the crop management advice by the Agriculture Department Extension officers," the farmer said. He did not use any fertiliser even during late December last year when the crop was attacked by the blast disease, following mist. The Assistant Director of Agriculture (in-charge), Avudaiyarkovil, R. Venkatasubramnian, said that nine farmers participated in the district-level contest three each from Avudaiyarkovil, Alankudi and Pudukottai taluks. The Collector S. J. Chiru gave away the prize of Rs. 8,000 to Mr. Sevugaperumal on Friday. The second prize went to P. Sundaramurthy of Selvanendhal, also of Avudaiyarkovil taluk, who harvested 9,600 kg per hectare.
