THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: National research scholar and Vice-Chancellor, University of Manipal, Dr. M.S.Valiathan on Sunday stressed the need for increased collaboration between research and development institutions in the country to develop new high technology products for the medical sector. He was delivering the Dr. V.C.Mathew Roy memorial oration on `Triumph of technology-driven medicine with congenital heart surgery as a model' at a workshop on paediatric cardiology here. Dr. Valiathan said India was heavily dependent on imported medical instruments, especially in cardiology. He proposed project-based, long-term collaboration for development of medical products in the country. Earlier, Minister for Health and Family Welfare P.K.Sreemathy inaugurated the workshop. Director of Medical Education (DME) Dr.Meenu Hariharan presided over the function. The Minister released the conference souvenir by handing over a copy to the DME. Medical College Principal Dr.V.Rema Devi released the SAT Hospital Revised Protocol for the Management of Sick Children by presenting it to the SAT Hospital Superintendent Dr.K.Rajmohan. Former Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiology, Sree Chithra Tirunal Institute of Medical Science and Technology, Dr.G.Vijayaraghavan was honoured on the occasion. Professor and Head of the department, Department of Paediatrics, Dr.Lalitha Kailas and senior cardiologists Dr.K.M.Tharakan and Dr.George Koshy addressed the gathering. Dr.Zulfikar Ahamed, paediatric cardiologist, Medical College led a questionnaire session.
