dated April 24, 1957: Decimal coins

The Union Finance Ministry, in a press note issued on April 23, says, "Some of the new decimal coins have a dot below the year of coinage on the reverse side and some have not. It has been surmised in certain quarters that one of these two types may be spurious. The fact is that there is an age-old practice of distinguishing between coins made in Bombay and those made in Calcutta. The Bombay mint coins have dots and the Calcutta mint coins do not have them. This was the practice even before the introduction of decimal coinage. In the approved design of decimal coins there was no mention either of there being a dot or there being none. Both the coins, with dots and without dots, are of the approved design and both are legal tender."
