Project to map environment, for fun and learning

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR) in association with the Department of Education is organising a history study programme for upper primary and high school students this vacation. Titled `Journeying into history,' the programme focusses on understanding the history of the local environment of a selected location.

The participating children will be required to figure out the topography, prepare a map of the region and assess the changes in the environment over the last 60 years. During the quest they will have to investigate the history of the land use pattern, agricultural practices and the trades of the local people. Students can take up the journey in groups, with teachers or other elders as guides.

After identifying the team and guide, they can select a location and embark on the trip. During the journey, they will have to observe the geography on both sides and elicit information on the environment from the local people. Whatever has been seen, heard or collected through various sources has to be systematically recorded after consultation with others. The children will later use the data to prepare maps showing the changes in the environment during the years 2007, 1975 and 1950.

The study report, not more than 15 pages, can be prepared in any language. Diagrams and figures are permitted. The details of the resource persons will have to be given at the end of the report.

Prizes will be given for the outstanding reports from each district. Apart from cash prize, students can also win books and certificates. There will be separate prizes for guides and schools.

The last date for receiving the study report is June 30. Kits containing posters and detailed guidelines for the programme are being despatched to schools across the State. Headmasters have been directed to contact the Assistant Education Officer or Deputy Education Officer if they have missed the kits.

Details on the programme are available at the KCHR office, P.B. no. 839, Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan, Nalanda, Thiruvananthapuram- 695 003 or at the e-mail address kchr@sancharnet.in
