Tournament for seniors revived

BANGALORE: The all-India senior tennis tournament, which was annually held by the Senior Tennis Players Association of Karnataka, was discontinued last year when its sponsor for seven years, IOC, pulled out.

Now, thanks to support of the Hyderabad-based GVK Group, STEPAK, the tournament has been revived in Bangalore, with a better purse (Rs. 2.5 lakhs) as well.

According to the organising secretary, Mr. K.C. Nagaraj, the tournament, now called the GVK-AISTA STEPAK 2007 championship, has attracted nearly 200 entries from Karnataka, AP, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala and the event which began here with qualifying rounds, has over 200 players in the fray.

"We have three age groups including 45 +, 55 +, 65 + in both singles and doubles. The matches will be played at KGS Club, KSCA and Century Club courts and finals are scheduled at KGS Club on April 28," he added.

The prize money for the championship is likely to be doubled next year, according to the organisers. Another programme on the agenda is to start an all-senior series under the auspices of the All-India Senior Tennis Association. — Special Correspondent
