Puducherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy told the Assembly on Monday that the Government was prepared to construct multi-storeyed tenements in Francois Thoppu and Rasu Odayar Thoppu in Uppalam Assembly constituency here for the slum dwellers. He explained the steps taken to mitigate the sufferings of 377 families who lost their homes in the two hamlets in the April 20 fire. The Chief Minister asked A. Anbalagan (AIADMK), who raised the issue, to refrain from indulging in `intimidatory tactics' to pressure the government on relief and rehabilitation works in the hamlets. The Government would not let down the poor families, he said. A total of 377 huts were damaged either fully or partially in the mishap. He announced Rs. 10,000 as immediate relief to each of the families either from government funds. Typically, only Rs 6000 is made available as immediate relief to the fire victims.
