Corrections and Clarifications

  • A report "New at Vandalur zoo: bouncing bison calf" (Chennai, April 12, 2007, page 4) said that a newborn bison calf was the newest attraction at the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur. The accompanying photograph showed a Gaur (Bos gaurus). A reader says that there is no bison in India and that the Gaur is an ox. Dr. R.J. Ranjit Daniels, wildlife ecologist, clarifies that the bison is an English word that refers to wild cattle in Europe and America. The Gaur is called an Indian bison though it is not the same as the European or American bison. The report could have made things clear by saying the "Indian bison", instead of just bison.

  • Clue 13 Across (The Hindu Crossword 8888, April 16, 2007) was "Hid in our national language (5)". The solution (April 17, 2007) was "Hindi". We repeat the clarification that we issued on October 12, 2006, and January 11, 2007. In the Constitution, there is no language that is termed as "national language". Article 343 states that "The official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devanagari script". The clue should have been "... official language", which is the correct term, and not "national language". The clue does not have an anagram signal.

  • In a report "Chelsea cuts Man U's lead" ("Sport", April 20, 2007), the results column should have read Chelsea beat West Ham 4-1 and not West Ham United beat Chelsea, as was published.
