Bangkok: Suspected Muslim insurgents ambushed military vehicles rushing to quench a fire at a public school in Thailand's restive south, injuring 19 soldiers, a military commander said on Monday. Two trucks were turned over by roadside bomb blasts before the suspected rebels opened fire at the troops, leaving 18 wounded in the gunbattle. A soldier on a motorcycle was injured in a second explosion. The soldiers were trying to reach an elementary school in Narathiwat's mountainous district of Sungai Padi, which was set on fire last night, said Lt. Col. Rungroj Ananthayo, an army official in the area. AP
