Skulls recovered

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: A human skeleton smuggling racket was uncovered with the recovery of about 50 skulls and assortment of bones at Katwa in West Bengal's Burdwan district on Monday. Investigation is proceeding on whether those involved had links outside the country.

The State Government has ordered a CID inquiry into the episode, Inspector of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said here.

Seven persons have been arrested so far. It is believed that the skulls were either dug up from a cemetery or stolen from morgues.

The matter came to light following a complaint that four bodies were missing from the graveyard. Raids were conducted in a house in the Purbasthalai area of Katwa after which the skulls and bones were recovered from the banks of a nearby river.

Interrogations revealed that the skulls were sold to medical institutions and those involved had links in Kolkata.
