Bhoomi puja performed for mega project

3,000-bed research hospital cum medical college planned

KORAPUT: It was a surprise for everyone when the bhoomi pooja for a mega project worth Rs.700 crores to construct a 3,000-bed Medical College cum Research Hospital was performed at Landiguda near Koraput on Sunday. K. H. Reddy was stunned to receive calls congratulating him for the project. The district Collector's office too expressed its ignorance of any such step by anyone in the district.

Journalists were baffled to witness such a massive arrangement to launch the institution in the region. Bhimasen Bhatra, chairperson of the All Orissa Commerce Students Association (AOCSA) of Bhubaneswar, speaking to the media said the organisation had an ambitious plan to open the hospital with financial assistance from some foreign funding agencies. The state government had given clearance to acquire land and hence was given 29 acres of land in Landiguda, he said. The construction of the outdoor building for the hospital would be completed by August this year and admission to MBBS would begin by 2008, he said.

Compensation

Four families living on the land were compensated by the organisation, he said. When asked Subash Chandra Raita, tahsildar of Koraput revealed that while the land was shown to them after they had received a letter from the Revenue Minister's office, no letter of proposal was given by the organisation yet.

The confusion regarding allowing the land to be used had links with the visit of a Central team last year to establish a Nursing College at Koraput. The revenue officials had shown the same place to them and with no action from the government in this regard for a long time and with AOCSA approaching them for land, no suspicion was raised , he said. However, he has instructed to put a halt to any work on the site.
