Congress offers support to Gandhada Koti agitation

Staff Correspondent

`Construction of building inside the park will not be allowed'

HASSAN: Congress announced its complete support to the bandh on May 2 called by Gandhada Koti Usili Horata Samiti. Addressing presspersons in Hassan on Monday, MLA and former Congress Minister Shivaram said they would support the demand of people of Hassan to maintain Gandhada Koti as a forest park and not to allow construction of any building inside the park.

Mr. Shivaram said the Gandhada Koti agitation is for a public cause. There is nothing wrong with getting political mileage by supporting the cause that too with the local body elections coming up.

Mr. Shivaram said even now it was not too late. The proposed Rs. 142 crore hospital building for Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences could be shifted to the outskirts of the city, either by the side of Ring Road or near Chennapatna tank.

The present hospital building can be developed as a major district hospital. This will also help the city develop instead of decentralising it. People should respond to all development projects. Mr. Shivaram said in Holenarsipur, hometown of Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna, five roads (total of 1.4 km) are being laid within hundred-metre radius at a cost of Rs. 14 crore.

This is people's money and it should not be spent haphazardly. Ultimately the only beneficiaries are contractors, he said.

Acquiring land

When you acquire a pice of land convince the farmers and negotiate the price for it. Otherwise, farmers would be thrown out, Mr. Shivaram said.

S.M. Anand, MLC, Raje Gowda, former president of the District Congress Committee, and M. Chandre Gowda were present.
