New varsity Bill gets the nod

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit expressed satisfaction over the Budget Session of the Assembly that ended on Monday stating that besides presentation of the Budget "that did not tax anybody'', the session legislated some important business like passing the Bharat Ratna Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Vishwavidyalaya Bill, 2007, for setting up a new university.

The new University, the Chief Minister said, would provide relief to thousands of students of the Arts, Commerce and Humanities streams in getting admission. She said a sum of Rs 10 crore has been allocated for the new University in the current year and it was expected to become functional in 2008.

Speaking on the other important matters that came up for discussion, Ms. Dikshit said water was definitely a big issue. "The water situation has been good so far and there have been no serious problems anywhere,'' she said, adding that about 60 million gallons per day (MGD) supply has been added due to the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant. The situation, she added, would improve further when the 140 MGD plant would function at optimal level.

The Chief Minister said there was a plan to add 45 MGD capacity through addition of a water treatment plant. But most importantly, she added, there was a need to check leakages and that would be achieved in about three years. "By then there would be more equitably distribution of the water supply,'' she hoped, adding that her Government had chalked out an action plan to enhance availability of potable water up to 940 MGD in the near future.

As for the cleaning of the Yamuna, she said while it remained a ticklish issue in the absence of proper technology, an interceptor system was being planned to prevent sewage water from going into the river.

On the economic front, she said, the condition was good and an increase in tax collections had been registered.

Ms. Dikshit said the government had filed the Action Taken Report in the Assembly on the Public Account Committee report that had indicted the Government on power privatisation and it was now for the Speaker to act on it.
