Congress workers take out rally seeking steps to check spread of jaundice in Berhampur

Staff Reporter

Seek emergency meeting of municipal council

BERHAMPUR: Congress workers of the city took out a rally in the city on Monday demanding immediate steps to curb rise in jaundice cases in the city.

The party activists led by city Congress president Sanjit Panigrahi and Pradesh Congress Committee member Bikram Panda and Congress councillors took out the rally from the District Congress office and later handed over a memorandum to Berhampur sub-collector Sangram Panda.

According to Mr Panigrahi, supply of contaminated drinking water and contaminated food sold at roadside kiosks was the main reason behind jaundice cases in areas like Babaji Thota Street, Radha Krushna Street and Gate bazaar area of the city. The Congress leaders held discussions with the sub-collector and urged him to convene an emergency meeting of the municipal council to take remedial measures on war-footing.

They demanded immediate cleaning of all sumps, overhead storage tanks and tankers used for drinking water supply. They blamed the corroded drinking water pipelines that pass through drains to be root cause of water contamination that led to jaundice upsurge and demanded their replacement and relocation of the pipelines.

Contaminated food

They were not satisfied with the work of municipality health officials in checking the sale of contaminated food in the city and wanted regular testing of fast food sold at roadside kiosks. Congress workers also demanded that all water bodies in the city including wells, ponds and deep borewells to be disinfected as water has started to become a scarce commodity with advent of summer.
