THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) has proposed revising the power tariff for certain categories of consumers, upward in some cases and downward in some others. High tension and extra high tension industries will have to pay 100 per cent extra over the normal rates for energy consumed during peak hours. The extra tariff presently charged for peak hour consumption is 80 per cent. The tariff goes down for religious institutions, Government offices/institutions, Kerala Water Authority (KWA), Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), orphanages, schools and hostels for mentally challenged children. For railway traction, the proposal is for an upward revision. For all other categories of consumers, including the domestic consumers, no change in tariff is proposed. The SERC makes these proposals in its `draft tariff schedule' based on the Kerala State Electricity Board's estimates of its financial operations during the current financial year. The revision is to come into effect from June 1. The SERC will receive objections and suggestions on the `draft tariff schedule' till May 15. The details of the schedule are on the SERC website www.erckerala.org. The proposed changes in the tariff schedule are: For religious institutions, temples, mosques, churches, etc., the per unit rate for power consumed in excess of 500 units will come down from the present Rs.5.20 to Rs.5. For Government offices and Government institutions the per unit rate for power consumed in excess of 500 units will come down from the present Rs.5.90 to Rs.5.70. Offices/installations of public utility institutions such as KWA and KSRTC will enjoy reduction in tariff at both lower and higher levels of consumption. Up to a consumption of 500 units, the rate will come down from 6.75 to Rs.6.55 for each unit and for consumption exceeding 500 units, from 8.60 to 8.40 per unit. In the case of orphanages, schools, hostels for the mentally challenged and similar institutions, the existing rates were Rs.0.75 and Rs.0.85 per unit respectively for power consumption below and above 100 units. For railway traction, the `demand charge' is to go up from Rs.2.30 to Rs.2.45 and the per unit energy charge from Rs.2.25 to Rs.2.90.
