Canadian denied bail

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Monday refused to grant bail to Canadian national Ernest Fenwick Macintosh who was arrested earlier this month in neighbouring Gurgaon on charges of performing indecent acts and assaults on men in more than 40 cases in Canada.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kamini Lau extended the judicial custody of Macintosh till April 25. The court rejected the plea of Macintosh's lawyer that there was no law in India under which he could be tried here for the charges levelled against him.

However, since Macintosh through his lawyer expressed his intention to face trial in Canada and sought three weeks' time to wrap up his business here, the court asked him to submit a list of the things he intended to do in order to wrap up his business.

Macintosh, a telecommunications engineer with a multi-national company, was working in Gurgaon where he was arrested by the Delhi police following a warrant issued by the court. The accused has been charged in more than 40 cases of indecent acts and assaults on men between 1970 and 1975 when he was in Canada.
