THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Immediate steps will be taken to ensure that the Kerala Water Authority's (KWA) pumping stations at Aruvikkara get uninterrupted power supply round the clock, Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran has said. The Minister, on Monday, held a `surprise inspection' of the KWA's facilities at Aruvikkara and also visited the 11 kV sub-station there to inspect the records relating to power outages. The Minister found that from April 7 to April 21 there were as many as seven disruptions in power supply to Aruvikkara, totalling 11 hours and 45 minutes. This has seriously hampered efforts to maintain a regular supply of water to the city, a press release issued here said. When pumping from Aruvikkara is disrupted, the water level in the reservoirs in the city fall sharply. The consumption of water is very high in the summer months. As such only if there is uninterrupted storage of water in these reservoirs for at least 24 hours can water be supplied continuously to the elevated areas in the city.
Reservoirs
If the valves in the distribution lines are regulated to allow more water to collect in the reservoirs even the low-lying areas in the city will not get any water. Therefore, only uninterrupted pumping from Aruvikkara can ensure uninterrupted water supply in the city, the press release read. The shifting of water supply to private tankers from Vellayambalam to Aruvikkara has led to an increased availability of water to the city to the tune of two million litres a day. Water is being pumped from Aruvikkara by running the treatment plant at full capacity, the press release added. KWA MD T.P. Mohanlal and Technical Member T. S. Suresh Babu were among those who accompanied the Minister to Aruvikkara.
