God's graciousness

CHENNAI : There is a common misconception that worship of the formless aspect of the Supreme Being (Nirguna) is superior to worshipping His forms (Saguna). This is not true. It must be borne in mind that even great saints who were Advaitins (non-dualists) adored His manifestations and composed innumerable hymns out of their spiritual experiences. Besides, it is out of compassion that the Almighty incarnates in the world to redeem humanity from bondage. His incarnations in human form as Rama and Krishna are especially important for man's redemption as He made Himself accessible to one and all.

In his discourse, Sengalipuram Sri B.Damodara Dikshitar said it was difficult to realise the Absolute directly without first experiencing God in His form through devotion. And, this has been stated by no less than the creator Brahma in his prayer to Lord Krishna: "In the case of those who, neglecting devotion to You, take pains to attain mere spiritual enlightenment, such enlightenment ultimately proves to be no more than a source of exertion alone... " This is highlighted to emphasise that the mind becomes engrossed with devotion much more effortlessly than if it has to engage in meditation on the Absolute.

The Gopis of Brindavan were such exemplary devotees whose lives revolved round Krishna ever since Vasudeva brought Him to Nandagopa's household. Going about their daily routine their minds dwelled on Krishna and their exchanges related to His frolics and divine deeds. One such incident was the beatitude attained by Putana, the ogress who was sent by Kamsa to kill all infants in Gokul. Kamsa's intention was to eliminate Krishna. But, she who came with the evil intent of killing Him, by mere contact with Him, attained the state that saints do by performing penance. Suka, while narrating this, wondered how much more should a devotee, who offered something with utmost reverence and devotion to Lord Krishna as those in Gokul did, would deserve His grace. By His power of Maya and affection by identifying with Him, Krishna lulled the cowherd community into believing He was one of them.
