Much in store for shoppers

The Big B of the retail sector is set to open its doors right in the heart of the capital city's commercial zone. After the hue and cry raised by small traders over the impending arrival of multinational retail chains, things seem to have settled down.

Much is in store for shoppers if the ongoing work at the first Big Bazaar outlet is any indication.

The multi-storey, steel-cladded shopping mall at Mele Pazhavangady will be the first commercial institution in the city to boast of an escalator.

Big boards promising a whole new experience for shoppers have been put up all along the façade. A food bazaar is another attraction of the mall. The acute lack of parking space in the locality is one thing that is of concern to civic officials.

Both sides of the road are full of parked vehicles during peak hours. Municipal authorities fear that a supermarket drawing thousands of customers daily will add to the congestion and play havoc with the traffic situation.

Urban planners point out that a high-footfall shopping mall is best located away from the core area of the city.

"With malls offering everything under one roof, it will not take much to draw shoppers," says a civic official.
