Save the earth

The Forest and Wildlife Department celebrated World Earth Day here on April 22 by organising a function. Classes on topics ranging from conservation of biodiversity to environmental pollution were informative to the audience, comprising mostly representatives from local bodies and teacher trainees. The inaugural session was attended by district panchayat president K.K. Narayanan and Kannur municipal chairman K. Upendran

They exhorted the people to work for the protection of the planet.

One of the speakers invited to offer felicitation asked why Mr. Narayanan and Mr. Upendran, though concerned about the environmental hazards, could do little to enforce the ban on plastic carry bags.

The speaker, an environmental activist, said the Government ban on plastic carry bags was being defied in the district. Plastic bags were widely used in the district, he said.

The audience felt that there was no better sentiment to be expressed on World Earth Day.
