CHENNAI: Billroth Group of Hospitals on Monday launched super speciality divisions, newly-acquired equipment and diagnostic facilities. Public Works Minister Durai Murugan, who participated in the launch, said hospital treatment involved a great deal of team effort.
New trust
The Minister, who laced his speech with humour, said in a lighter vein: "I was introduced to the hospital by Pitchandi [MLA of Tiruvannamalai constituency] and I continue to be a patient of Jeganathan [the hospital founder] even today." The hospital has launched a medical and educational trust, which proposes to start a B.Sc. course in nursing. National Board of Examinations president A. Rajasekaran said in the current scenario of fewer higher medical education opportunities, many doctors seek to take up speciality courses offered by the Diplomate of National Board. The Board offers 42 specialities, he said.
"Shortage of doctors"
Health secretary V.K. Subburaj said there was a shortage of doctors in the health services. The government refused to release doctors under the voluntary retirement scheme because of the shortage. "We need 1,000 doctors in the three medical colleges coming up in Villupuram, Tiruvarur and Dharmapuri," he said. Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy inaugurated the super speciality division of the hospital. Food Minister E.V. Velu, hospital founder V. Jeganathan, Venkatesa group of companies chairman V. Genguswamy Naidu and Congress Legislature Party leader D. Sudharssanam also spoke.
