President's rule in Nagaland sought

Iboyaima Laithangbam

Complete breakdown of law and order cited

IMPHAL: The Leader of the Opposition in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, I. Imkong, has sought imposition of President's rule in the State. He contended that the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) Government, led by Nephieu Rio, has failed to maintain law and order.

Talking to presspersons at Kohima on Monday, he said the Government could not rush police and paramilitary forces to Dimapur, the main commercial town, to control mob violence on Sunday. This was clearly an instance of complete breakdown of law and order and had nothing to do with the factional killings.

In the past, the Chief Minister had always escaped saying that the bloodshed was the result of the factional clashes between the NSCN (IM) and the NSCN (K).

He said there was no police action during the 10-hour mob frenzy. Over 300 Tangkhul tribals, displaced from Wungram Colony in Dimapur, are taking shelter at the police station at Chumukedima. Others are at the NSCN (IM) camp in Hebron.

Following the assault on an autorickshaw driver, Abodi, by some Tangkhul youth at Wungram, thousands of Sumi Nagas attacked the residential areas of Tangkhuls.

Houses gutted

Thirty-nine houses, 19 vehicles, and properties worth crores of rupees were destroyed in fires started by the mob. The houses of the NSCN (IM) `army chief' Hangshi and convener of the steering committee R.H. Raising were gutted. Leaders of Tangkhul and Sumis have held talks and the violence has been contained.

Tension is running high at Dimapur and prohibitory orders are still in force.
