Puducherry : The Meenavar Viduthalai Vengaigal (Tamil Nadu and Puducherry) championing the cause of fishermen has called upon the administration to enhance the quantum of assistance given to each of the fishermen families during the ban on fishing to Rs.3,000 from Rs.500. Its founder R. Mangayarselvan said in a release on Tuesday that a detailed letter had been sent to the Chief Minister. He said that a Fishermen Development Corporation should be set up to address their grievances. The ban imposed on April 15 will be in force till May 30. The other demands of the organisation included waiver of loans the fishermen had borrowed from nationalised banks for purchase of mechanised boats. The fishermen who had lost their houses in the 2004 December tsunami in the coastal villages of Puducherry and Karaikal should be provided houses. Where sites were not available for the housing project, each of the homeless families could be sanctioned a grant of Rs 5 lakh. The organisation had urged the Chief Minister to concede the demands and necessary announcements should be made during the current session of the Assembly.
