Puducherry
Special Correspondent
Puducherry : Legislators of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam A. Anbalagan, Ohm Sakthi Segar and M.V. Omalingam, staged a walkout in the Assembly on Tuesday to protest against "absence of replies" on an issue that Mr. Anbalagan had raised earlier. Mr. Anbalagan said during zero hour that the Assembly had frequently adopted unanimous resolutions to urge the Centre to confer full Statehood on Puducherry. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy had also offered to take all legislators to New Delhi to meet the Union Home Minister to reiterate the plea and sanction more powers for the Government. Even as the Chief Minister and all others were asserting these, Local Administration Minister Malladi Krishna Rao had, however, taken a different stand. He addressed a press conference in Yanam a few days ago dissociating himself from the plea for the Statehood of Puducherry. According to media reports, Mr. Rao had opined that Statehood was utterly unnecessary for Puducherry. He had also said he would tender his resignation as Minister if Statehood was granted, and mobilise the people of Yanam to launch an agitation against any move for Statehood.
`Deviation'
Mr. Anbalagan asked how the Minister could deviate from the policy decision of the Cabinet. He termed Mr Rao's stand as not correct. All proceedings of the House should be adjourned to discuss the situation arising out of Mr Rao's dissidence. Speaker R. Radhakrishnan told Mr. Anbalagan that he could not pressure the Government for replies. He asked the member to facilitate the House to take up next agenda of the day. With the Government not furnishing replies, Mr. Anbalagan and his colleagues staged a walkout. They, however, returned later.
