DCW for setting up sexual harassment monitoring cells

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: With instances of vulnerability of the girl child in schools coming to light, the Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women has written to the Municipal Commissioner asking for establishment of sexual harassment monitoring committees to check such incidents.

"I have written to the Municipal Commissioner asking for institution of district level committees and one apex level committee to address the issues of sexual harassment," said DCW Chairperson Kiran Walia on Tuesday.

Her letter comes in the wake of rising cases of harassment of young girls, the latest being the alleged molestation of a 10-year-old girl by the Principal of a MCD-run primary school at Pushp Vihar this past week. "It is the weakest section that goes to the MCD-run schools and sexual harassment committees are needed so the victims would know whom to approach," said Ms. Walia.

A deterrent

The DCW Chairperson hoped that establishment of such committees would also act as a deterrent. "People will know that they cannot get away and the matter will not be brushed under the carpet," said Ms. Walia. She also suggested that the MCD conduct workshops for all its teachers to sensitise them about issues of harassment and prevent such incidents from happening.
