Bakre holds Ehlvest

NEW DELHI: Tejas Bakre pulled off a surprise draw against top seed Jaan Ehlvest even as youngster B. Adhiban, Eesha Karavade and Vikramaditya Kamble enjoyed their share of the spotlight in the second round of the ninth Dubai Open chess tournament in Dubai on Monday.

R.B. Ramesh scored his second victory to be among the 17 leaders.

Bakre, the lowest rated Indian Grandmaster at 2427, forced a creditable result following perpetual checks in the 47-move encounter on the top board.

Ehlvest, rated 2640, had gained a clear advantage after trading a rook for a bishop on the 30th move. He later gave up queen for a rook to retain the edge. With Ehlvest in sight of bringing his queen back on the board, Bakre had no choice but to salvage half a point through repeated checks.

Eesha, Adhiban delight

Eesha provided the second big result by holding Qatari GM Mohammad Al-Modiahki in 36 moves. Tamil Nadu youngster B. Adhiban also made light of a rating difference of over 200 points and proved equal to 11th seeded K. Humpy, the top-rated Indian in the field.

Kamble was the other Indian to grab attention after holding former ladies World champion Georgia's Maia Chiburdanidze.
