Berg bests Parimarjan

NEW DELHI: Parimarjan Negi surrendered to Sweden's Emanuel Berg after an interesting tactical battle in the sixth round of the Sigeman chess tournament in Malmo, Sweden, on Monday.

Berg sacrificed a knight on the 12th move for a kingside attack and three pawns as compensation. Parimarjan's counter-attack turned the game into an engrossing duel.

However, Berg promoted his kingside pawns to aid his queen and rook and that made the decisive difference in 43 moves.

On a day when all five boards produced winners, top-seeded Bulgarian Ivan Cheparinov led with five points. Parimarjan shared the fourth spot at 2.5 points in the 10-player field.

The results (sixth round): Emanuel Berg (Swe, 4.5) bt Parimarjan Negi (2.5); Ivan Cheparinov (Bul, 5) bt Vassilios Kotronias (Gre, 2.5); Pontus Carlsson (Swe, 2.5) lost to Jan Timman (Ned, 3); Tiger Hillarp Persson (Swe, 4.5) bt Erwin L'Ami (Ned, 2.5); Emil Hermansson (Swe, 1) lost to Jonny Hector (Swe, 2).
