Thiruvananthapuram: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) will be empowered to register cases against managements of educational institutions demanding capitation fees for admission. Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, he said the VACB could register such cases on its own or on the basis of specific complaints. He said the Supreme Court had deemed the practice of demanding capitation fees for admission as corruption. He said the VACB had considerably reduced the number of pending cases. The bureau would conduct more surprise checks at Government offices to reduce corruption. It would also crack down on sand and `blade' mafias and other organised groups that earn ill gotten wealth through corrupt and criminal means. The VACB was also investigating the illegal encroachment of revenue and forestland in Idukki district. Earlier, at a close door meeting with VACB officials, the Minister said anti-corruption officials would be given a special salary allowance and their norms of transfer reworked. VACB director Upendra Verma was also present.
