Rag pickers protest

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: Gypsies engaged in rag picking and collection of used plastic staged a dharna in front of the SP's camp office here on Tuesday alleging police harassment attributing thefts and robberies to them, though they were innocent.

Women and aged persons among the gypsies living at Gowramma Colony near Bukkaraya Samudram gathered in front of the SP's camp office and urged the police to stop harassment.

They explained that they were being charged with robberies and thefts by the police regularly, in spite of their non-involvement.

MoU submitted

They pleaded that they had been eking out a living by rag picking and were not resorting to any kind of illegal or anti-social activities.

They were led by CPI (M) leaders -- G. Obulakonda Reddy, P. Peddi Reddy, O. Nallappa, H. Ramudu -- and others.

They submitted a memorandum to the police officers present at the SP's camp office.
