HYDERABAD: The Left parties are in a piquant situation by continuing their support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government, according to Communist Party of India MP S. Sudhakar Reddy. The Left parties, he said, were apprehensive of "communal forces" taking over the reins if they withdrew support. "At the same time, we don't want to become party to all the policies that are being implemented by the UPA Government," Mr. Reddy, who is a member of the CPI's central secretariat, said.
Absence of third front
Participating in a meeting to commemorate the birth centenary of Communist stalwart P.C. Joshi here on Tuesday, he said over the years, the Left parties were playing a crucial role in all the major political developments in the country. However, the absence of the third front had forced the Left to support the UPA for keeping "communal forces" at bay. Though the relevance of the Left parties in the country's political scenario had been increasing, they were still weak in the large Hindi-speaking belt. This called for the need to forge unity among the Left forces to grow in strength and fight the "inhuman" globalisation and liberalisation policies. Recalling the services rendered by P.C. Joshi, CPI (M) Polit Bureau member B.V. Raghavulu cautioned the activists against "imperialist forces" working to dislodge the democratically elected Governments of Left parties.
