AIR to launch serial on freedom fighters

Weekly broadcast to begin on May 1

CHENNAI: A 26-part serial, "Sudandiram Thandha Sudargal," for a duration of 15 minute each, will be broadcast every week by All India Radio on Chennai-A at 8-15 p.m. on Tuesdays beginning May 1.

The serial, planned to mark the 60th year of India's Freedom and the completion of 150 years of the First Indian War of Independence (1857), is aimed to project the "Spartan life, sacrifices and monumental work done by the patriots, who in the quest for freedom from foreign rule, gave their life to the cause of the nation."

The life and work of the personalities would be presented as a feature with the songs of Subramanya Bharathiyar, Bharathidasan and Namakkal Kavignar. The personalities covered include Tiruppur K. Kumaran, Rajagopalachari, Bala Gangadhar Tilak, Aurobindo, Kamaraj, Vanchinathan, Subramanya Shiva, Shenbagaraman and Subramanya Bharathi.
