Karunanidhi warns job racketeers

CHENNAI:
The State Government will take stern action against racketeers who fleece people promising them jobs abroad, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Monday.
He told the Assembly that in 143 cases of job racket registered in 2006, 108 persons were arrested.
A total of 42 cases were dropped as the complaints were not genuine, 37 cases were being investigated and 63 cases pending before courts. In one case the accused was sentenced.
From January 1 to March 31, a total of 21 persons were arrested in 31 cases. Of these two cases were dropped, 23 were being investigated and six pending before courts, he said.
A total of 1,568 persons, mostly doctors and nurses, got placements abroad through the Overseas Manpower Corporation from 1996-1997 to 2006-2007, Mr. Karunanidhi said.
