Jayalalithaa "getting adequate protection"

Special Correspondent

  • The police have registered a case: Chief Minister
  • "Not the first time" she is receiving threats

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi informed the Assembly on Tuesday that Leader of the Opposition Jayalalithaa, who gets `Z' category and NSG cover, was being given adequate protection as per the rules.

Replying to a Special Calling Attention Motion moved by AIADMK members, including its deputy leader in the Assembly O. Panneerselvam on the office of Jaya TV receiving a post card threatening Ms. Jayalalithaa with dire consequences if the TV did not stop criticising Mr. Karunanidhi, the Chief Minister said the police had registered a case.

He reminded the House that this was not the first time that Ms. Jayalalithaa had received a threat and listed some of the previous instances.

The same person had also sent threat letters to the Madurai Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple trustee on April 20 and also to the Madras Port Trust official on April 21. In both the cases, the person had affixed the name of the outfit `Al Umma' along with the rubber stamp bearing the name of Venkatesan, NGO Colony, Tirunelveli.

In the letter to the temple trustee, the person had stated that there would be bomb blasts in Madurai and challenged the trustee to prevent it. To the Chennai Port official, the person had stated that an explosive-laden boat would attack the Port.

"From all this it seems to be clear that the person had not sent the letters with a particular intention. However, the police are taking all steps to apprehend the person," he said.
