Emphatic win for Tamil Nadu

Tirunelveli: Tamil Nadu registered an emphatic 6-0 win over Puducherry in the four-team league of the 16th South Zone Youth National football championship organised by the Tirunelveli District Football Association at the Anna stadium, Palayamkottai, on Tuesday.

This was the first win for Tamil Nadu, which drew with Kerala in the opening match, while it was second successive defeat for Puducherry, in as many matches.

Tamil Nadu put up an improved display and could have won still by a bigger but for taking it easy in the last 20 minutes after getting the sixth goal. Striker Thiagarajan gave a fine display scoring three goals. He combined well with Nova, who scored a brace.

Thiagarajan opened the account in the 23rd minute from a Santha Kumar pass. He headed in the second goal off a free kick taken by Santha Kumar in the 39th. Fastening as to a forward pass from Kavi Bharathi, Nova went down the middle, on a solo and netted the third goal in the 52nd.

Three minutes later Nova scored again off a fine lob from stopper Vetrivel. Santha Kumar converted a spot kick in the 68th and Thiagarajan completed the tally two minutes later off a rebound from goalkeeper Jeevan Kumar.

Easy for seeds

All seeded players, including top seed Somasundaram of Salem in boys section, and top seed Nandhitha of Namakkal in girls section, had it easy in the opening round of the Tamil Nadu State under-11 chess championships organised by the Madurai District Chess Association at Madurai on Tuesday.

Important results (first round): Boys: Somasundaram 1 bt Mohamed Ali 0; Mohamed Hussain 0 lost to Ganesh 1; Kaushik 1 bt Rohit 0; Neeraj Kumar 0 lost to Vasanthasubavarman 1; Pradeep Kumar 0 lost to Kumaran 1; Pranav 1 bt Antasu 0; Adam Rinaldin 1 bt Pratap 0.

Girls: G. Lakshmi 0 lost to Nandhitha 1; Aarthi 0 lost to Meenu Priya 1; Abidavarshini lost to Nandhini 1; Abirame Srinithi 0 lost to Nivedita 1.

Cricket coaching camps

A three-week long Tamil Nadu Cricket Association summer residential coaching camp for boys under-17 organised by Theni District Cricket Association will commence at Horticultural College, Periakulam, on April 25.

Thirty boys from different districts will be attending the camp. Devendra Kumar and Jaffar Asique Ali will be the coaches and Raja will be the Physical Trainer for the camp.

Thirty boys from different districts will be attending the three-week long Tamil Nadu Cricket Association summer residential coaching camp for boys under-19, organised by Tirunelveli District Cricket Association at ICRC Turf ground, Sankarnagar, from April 25. The coaches for the camp will be Devanand and Venkatesh.
