CELEBRATION TIME: Private colleges celebrate by bursting crackers soon after the Intermediate results were declared in the city on Tuesday. Photo:K.R. Deepak
VISAKHAPATNAM: Corporate colleges have been robbed of the charm of celebrating the success of their rankers with the State Government doing away with the system of awarding ranks in Intermediate Final year examinations, the results of which were released on Tuesday. Nonetheless, many colleges claimed that their students, from other branches, got the highest marks and there was bursting of crackers. Many of the college managements were not sure of the highest marks as only grades were declared.
Marks through SMS
Though marks were given to those who sought them through SMS there was no mechanism to verify their correctness. There was jamming of phone lines which added to the problem. Many students, who were hopeful of obtaining more than 75 per cent, were not keen on checking the Internet as they were sure of getting `A' grade, which was the highest grade. "I am confident of getting more than 75 per cent and as the marks are not being issued, I took it easy," says K. Saranya, a student of Chaitanya College. The Internet browsing centres, however, made good business as those who were unsure of their grades making a beeline to the nearest centre. Meanwhile, the district has recorded an increase in pass percentage from 63 per cent last year to 65 per cent this year. Of the 30,213 students from the general stream who appeared this year, 19,654 passed, according to Regional Inspection Officer of the Intermediate Board Akella Bhaskara Rao. Of the 1,749 vocational students 1,006 passed registering a pass percentage of 58. He said Visakhapatnam district would bag the fifth or sixth place in the State. A number of students of Vijayawada Nalanda Educational Institutions have secured `A' grade. N.J.S. Suman secured 981 of 1,000 and was the first topper in MPC, according to a press release issued by the college principal Y.V. Subba Rao. Karthik, of the same college, with 980 marks was the second topper in MPC.
