SHIMLA: The Shimla District Committee of the CPI (M) has approached the State Election Commission alleging gross violation in preparation of electoral rolls for the coming Shimla Municipal Corporation elections. Party secretary Sanjay Chauhan, in a statement here, said that a preference had been shown in favour of the ruling party and vast chunks of voters had been deliberately kept out while preparing the electoral rolls.
Names struck off
The party has expressed surprise and shock that the authorities, when approached now, have instead of rectifying the error, refused to give fresh forms for enrolling the left-out voters. It has alleged that names of several genuine voters in all 25 wards of the town have been struck off the rolls. Quoting the instance of Krishna Nagar ward, Mr. Chauhan said the electoral rolls for the Municipal Corporation elections it had only 2,429 voters as against 3,950 during the last Assembly elections. He claimed that the present strength should be 4,068. Alleging irregularities in the electoral rolls at the behest of the State Government, the party secretary said names of over 1,600 voters had been struck off the rolls in a single ward to prevent these people from casting their votes. Seeking the Election Commission's intervention in the matter, he said it was necessary to ensure free and fair polls.
