HYDERABAD: The Government has ruled out any action to rectify the `mistake' committed by the NTR University of Health Sciences with respect to several first year MBBS students. A senior official in the Medical Education Department said the university was an autonomous institution and its decision relating to these students was final. The students, therefore, would have to appear for the first year supplementary examinations on May 15 although they have been promoted to the second year. About 4,000 students appeared for the MBBS first year exams in December 2006. While 790 students failed, 598 applied for re-totalling of marks. After this exercise, 290 students were declared passed. Backed by a High Court order, these students attended second year MBBS classes for some days. Following complaints by parents of the other students who remained in the first year, the university invalidated the re-totalling. As a result, all the 290 students who were declared as passed, now remain failed. The official said the university had committed mistake by re-valuing the answer papers instead of "re-totalling" leading to pass of 290 students. Later, the executive council of the university, going by statutory rules, proposed to cancel the re-valuation. The University Chancellor (Governor) approved the proposal and it has been upheld by the High Court. In the end, the "passed" students have been left in lurch.
