MP bemoans Left parties' dilemma

Special Correspondent

"Don't want BJP in power, but can't support UPA policies"

LEFT BRIGADE: CPI(M) leader B.V. Raghavulu greets a party activist in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

HYDERABAD: The Left parties are in a piquant situation by continuing their support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government, according to CPI MP S. Sudhakar Reddy.

The Left parties, he said, were apprehensive of "communal forces" taking over the reins if they withdrew support. "But, we don't want to become party to the policies that are being implemented by UPA Government," Mr. Reddy, a member of the CPI's central secretariat, said.

Participating in a meeting to commemorate the birth centenary of the Communist stalwart P.C. Joshi here on Tuesday, he said the Left parties were playing crucial role in the political developments in the country. However, the absence of the third front had forced the Left to support the UPA for keeping "communal forces" at bay.

Recalling the services rendered by P.C. Joshi for the growth of Communist movement in India, CPI (M) polit bureau member B.V. Raghavulu cautioned activists against "imperialist forces" working to dislodge Governments of Left parties.
