HYDERABAD: The Congress-sponsored bandh on April 21 to protest against Maharashtra's stand on Babli project has adversely affected `Praja Patham' programme in 216 gram panchayats and wards in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Nalgonda districts. As a result, the programme will now be taken up afresh in the five districts on May 10 and 11. That means villagers in these districts will have to suffer the height of summer without their grievances being addressed for three more weeks because `Praja Patham' is conceived to offer immediate solutions to problems like drinking water shortage.
Water shortage
In districts where the programme was held, the authorities received 576 petitions on drinking water shortage and they have already grounded 195 works. In the first phase of `Praja Patham' that ended on April 21 officials covered 7,173 panchayat wards and received 1,475 land-related petitions.
Review of first phase
This was communicated to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy at a review of the first phase of the programme here on Tuesday. The one-week programme also registered 24 cases of atrocities and 57 cases related to violation of the SC and ST Act. The release stated that there was no power shortage in 97 per cent of the villages covered and 88 per cent of the panchayats and wards reported satisfactory distribution of ration cards. In all 11.92 lakh job cards had been issued under National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) during `Praja Patham' and 6.76 lakh workers had gained wage employment.
