ALAPPUZHA: Four persons were arrested by the police here on Tuesday in connection with the murder of G. Chandran, an activist of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at Vettiyar, Mavelikara, near here, on Friday. According to Chengannur Deputy Superintendent of Police B. Ravindra Prasad, who led the investigation, two sets of brothers, reportedly owing allegiance to the CPI(M), were arrested from Vettiyar.
`Retaliatory attack'
The attack on Chandran, Mr. Prasad said, was carried out in retaliation for an attack on CPI(M) activist Sanal around 7 p.m. the same day, allegedly by a group of RSS-BJP workers. The four arrested are Praveen, 20 and Pradeep, 23, sons of Pankajakshan, Kottakakathu House, Vettiyar; and Robin, 18 and Roshan, 23, sons of Baby, Robin Villa, Vettiyar. All the four have been remanded to judicial custody. According to Mr. Prasad, the accused chased Chandran and a few other BJP workers on Friday night while looking out for those who had attacked Sanal. While the others managed to escape, Chandran fell into an unused quarry, where assailants attacked him with swords, iron rods and oars. The attack took place around 11 p.m., and the accused left the place leaving Chandran grievously injured. His body was found the next morning.
