BANGALORE: The Supreme Court's observation that Chief Ministers of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu should show statesmanship in solving the Cauvery river water disputes between the two States instead of depending on the courts came as a godsend for the protesters in the State. Responding to the court`s observations with satisfaction, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting M.H. Ambareesh on Tuesday said that it was the first step in rescuing the State from the impasse created by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. Mr. Ambaressh was addressing a huge gathering after inaugurating the 79th birthday celebrations of Kannada thespian Rajkumar at Kanteerava Studios. He inaugurated the Dr. Raj Ranga Namana week during which time the dramas in which the thespian had played lead roles would be staged. Thespian's wife Parvathamma Rajkumar, actor Vishnuvardhan, dramatist Master Hirannaiah, thespian's actor-sons Raghavendra Rajkumar, Shivarajkumar, and Puneeth Rajkumar, and Rajajinagar MLA N.L. Narendra Babu participated in the function. Commending the court's suggestion, the Union Minister said that Karnataka could share water with the neighbouring State only if there was enough storage in the reservoirs and not otherwise. Mr. Ambareesh asked the gathering whether anybody could share Rs. 500, if he or she had only Rs. 100 and added that one could partake Rs. 50 or even Rs. 55 with others and it would unjust to demand release of all the water. The Congress leader said that scientists, mathematicians and experts in law and river water disputes should be utilised for solving the Cauvery dispute. He was happy that Supreme Court's sensible suggestion came on the birthday of Rajkumar. He paid tributes to the legendary film hero for his achievements in acting, singing and more than anything his love for Kannada and Kannadigas and fighting for the cause of the State. Minister for Kannada and Culture H.S. Mahadeva Prasad presided over the function. Mr. Raghavendra Rajkumar thanked the Government for its intention to declare holiday on Rajkumar's birthday.
Directors Rajendra Singh Babu, and Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce president Tallam Nanjunda Setty were present. I.M. Vittala Murthy, Secretary, Department of Kannada and Culture, delivered the valedictory address. Commissioner of Information K.V.R.Tagore welcomed the gathering.
Trust opened
Writer Baragur Ramachandrappa on Tuesday launched Rajkumar Trust on the 79th birth anniversary on Tuesday.
Mr. Ramachandrappa, who is a member of the trust, said it would work for the people whom the late Rajkumar believed as God.
The trust was different from the one the Government proposed to set up.
It would work on a broader perspective in the field of healthcare, education and culture.
To start with, the trust would begin collecting the list of donors willing to donate eye in coordination with Narayana Netralaya.
Trust president Parvathamma Rajkumar pledged Rs. 5 lakh as her donation. She said a part of the earning of the family would be added to the amount every year.
