MANGALORE: Akhila Bharata Beary Parishat has demanded that the Beary community be identified as a backward caste among Muslims. B.A. Mohammad Hanif, president of the parishat, told presspersons on Tuesday that the Sachar Committee had made no mention of the economic, educational and social backwardness of the community. Even the Mandal Commission, which had identified backward castes among Muslims, had not included Bearys, he said. Mr. Hanif said the community with a population of over 20 lakh was extremely backward, and mainly came from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasaragod. Non-inclusion of the community in the study on the backwardness of Muslims by the seven-member committee headed by Rajinder Sachar was a mistake, he said and added that OBC status should be accorded to Bearys at the earliest, he said. The parishat has demanded that the Union Government implement the recommendations of the Sachar Committee soon to ensure the "overall progress" of Muslims in the country. Mr. Hanif said the parishat also wanted the term reservation to be replaced by "representation" or "distribution" in the Constitution. The parishat will hold a meeting in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Thursday to impress upon the Government to meet its demands.
